According to the rationalists, we know that the basic starting points are true because od their self-evidence. the rationalists consider basic principles and basic definitions to be self-evident. Basic principles are claims such as "something does not come from nothing" and "there is a explications of what basic categories, such as "substance" and "identity", are. The analysis of what is already "contained in" the category of substance or identity produces self-evident judgments. Judgements about basic princilpes and basic definitions are "necessary truths" because it is impossible for them to be fales.

 

합리주의자들에 따르면 우리는 그들의 자명함 때문에 기본 시작점이 진실하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 합리주의자들은 기본 원리와 기본 정의가 자명하도록 사고한다. 기본 원칙은 "무에서는 아무것도 나오지 않는다"와 "모든것이 존재하는 데에는 충분한 이유가 있다"와 같은 주장이다. 기본 정의는 "본질" 그리고 "독자성"과 같은 기본 범주가 무엇이냐에 관한 해설이다. 해석은 물질의 범주에 이미 "포함된"것 또는 자명한 판단을 만들어내는 독자성이 무엇인가 하는 것이다. 기본 원칙과 기본 정의에 대한 판단은 그들이 거짓되는 것이 불간으 하기 때문에 "필연적 진리"이다.
